This tree grows between 2 and 20 m high and its fruit is the pear. It lives an average of 65 years, though some have lived up to 400 years. Its roots are woody and deep, and its trunk is straight with grey cracked bark. The leaves are ovoid and up to 10 cm long, with a bright dark green upper side and yellow petioles. It has white or rosy white flowers with 1.5 cm petals in corymbs of 3 to 7 flowers. The fruit is an edible pome, green or brownish green.
